Reserves roar past Lions of Columbia, 3:0
April 15, 2012 (Official Game Summary)
Corey Hertzog led the way with two goals and Georgi Chirgadze tallied two assists as the New York Red Bulls reserves defeated the Columbia University Lions 3-0 at Montclair State University Sunday afternoon.
Red Bulls midfielder Brandon Barklage kicked off the scoring early on when he received a cross from Chirgadze less than 30 seconds into the match to put New York up 1-0.
Forward Jhonny Arteaga watched Hertzog slip free from the defense in the 27th minute and placed a through ball right to the foot of his fellow forward, who delivered home the easy goal to put the Red Bulls in command of a 2-0 lead.
Ryan Maduro nearly made it 3-0 seven minutes later after ripping a shot from right outside the top of the box, but Columbia's goalkeeper Michael Attal made a superb save and smothered the rebound to keep the ball out.
After the break, it was Hertzog again, this time in the 50th minute, courtesy of another Chirgadze cross. Chirgadze was buzzing around the goal yet again in the latter stages of the match, when he placed a cross into the box for Arteaga, but the shot just missed the mark and sailed wide of the goal.
Red Bulls goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo was rarely tested over the course of the match, but did step up big on two separate shot attempts to secure the clean sheet.
