Metro after Nesta and Zambrotta?
April 27, 2012
For the first four years of the MetroStars' existence, general manager Charlie Stillitano tried to turn them into the American version of AC Milan. It didn't exactly work. But he did sign Milan stalwart Roberto Donadoni, who commanded Metro's midfield for two years.
And now, if SoccerPlus is to be believed, Metro could be heading down the same path. According to the French website, RBNY representatives are meeting with AC Milan defenders Alessandro Nesta and Gianluca Zambrotta. "A source close to the Italian case" confirms he meeting.
Nesta, whose name first entered the rumor mill a month ago, is a 36-year-old central defender, considered by many as one of the best in world history. He started his career with Lazio, and has been with Milan since 2002. He has 72 caps for his country, helping them to the 2006 World Cup.
He was joined as world champion by Zambrotta, now 35. The fullback, who can play on the left and the right, has been with Milan since 2008, after previously turning out for Como, Bari, Juventus, and Barcelona. He has two goals in 98 caps for Italy.
