The strange ride of Rafhael Domingues
February 7, 2013

With Metro down to Malmo in the 79th minute, Mike Petke made a substitution. On came a player not listed on any preseason lists; someone named Rafhael Domingues. Two minutes from time, with the game now tied, Domingues took a pass from fellow trialist Marius Obekop, and promptly beat the keeper for a comeback victory.

So who on Earth is Rafhael Domingues?

A 19-year-old Brazilian-born Austrian youth international who was discovered on FaceBook. Say what?

Domingues played for a team named Toledo Colonia Work in Campeonato Paranaense, a regional league in Brazil. His grandparents were Austrian emmigrants, so Domingues made a FaceBook page entitled "Rafhael Domingues for AUSTRIA!!" that showed off his highlights. The videos were viewed by an Austrian official, and just like that, the youngster got capped for that country's Under-18 team. "Rafhinha" didn't speak a word of German, but did score twice in a victory over the Czechs. A trial with Borussia Dortmund followed.

So now, Domingues is here, and made a good first impression, to say the least. The road to the Metro roster would not be easy, and his status as an international will make it even more difficult. But what a strange ride it already is!...
