Brazilian midfielder Juninho scored his first goal as a Red Bull, but New York fell, 3-1, to the New England Revolution in its second game of the Desert Diamond Cup held at Kino Sports Complex. The loss was New York's first in the 2013 preseason, as its record is now 2-1-1.
Revolution forward Jerry Bengston was able to test New York goalkeeper Luis Robles seven minutes into the showdown, getting space in the box and firing a shot that Robles pushed aside.
Almost five minutes later, Juninho put New York in front. A deflected Red Bulls cross from the left wing was dummied by Thierry Henry and rolled into the path of Juninho, who smashed it past goalkeeper Matt Reis.
Tim Cahill nearly helped Juninho bag his second of the evening, laying it off at the top of the box in the 26th minute. Juninho struck it with his left foot and curled it just past the left post. Later, Fabian Espindola had his header off a corner kick deflected off target.
In the second half, New England was able to get on the scoreboard eight minutes in. Donnie Smith's shot from the left side was adjudged to have been handled by Red Bulls defender Jamison Olave in the box. Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen stepped up and chipped it right down the middle to tie the match.
Soon after, the Revolution took the lead. Smith's cross from the left wing was met by an open Bengston and the Honduran nodded it home. New England iced the result two minutes from full time, as Marko Jesic was played through on the right side of the box by Juan Toja and rolled it underneath substitute goalkeeper Ian Joyce and inside the left post.
