Media Day with Markus Holgersson
February 25, 2013
MetroFanatic: Markus...
Markus Holgersson: I think you have all the answers already.
MF: No! Because you're the last Scandinavian. How does it feel?
MH: It's really bad. So lonely. (long pause)
MF: Well, you don't have to stay. You can go back to lovely, cold Sweden.
MH: Yeah, but I have my contract, so.
MF: Do you like it here?
MH: Yeah, I like it here.
MF: Was it your choice to stay or was it the team's?
MH: Both. There was no question about it.
MF: Last year, you said MLS is a step up from Sweden. Is that the case?
MH: Yeah, definitely.
MF: You improved a lot during the last portion of the year.
MH: Yeah, of course, you have to learn the system, learn how it is, and then you're doing better and better. In the end, we got it together better and better, but we had a lot of movement in the back four.
MF: Is it the speed of the league, the physicality?
MH: It's the one-on-one situations. In Sweden, it's more organized. Here, after 60, 70 minutes, it's not organized anymore, and there more one-on-one situations. If you see Kansas City and San Jose, they are really organized teams, and they keep the same team every year, so they know how to play and succeed.
MF: You were given the captain's armband for a stretch last year when Henry was out.
MH: That was good for me. Hans and I got along real good. I was honored by the armband, it was a privilege.
MF: Hans is gone now...
MH: Yeah!
MF: He brought you over here, him and Soler, and they are gone now...
MH: I know, they saw me as a player, and that was good for me. Now you have to ask Mike.
