Ten Best: Metro at RFK

Which away stadium has Metro had the most victories at? Would you believe, RFK? Alright, that's cheating a bit, since all other MLS teams have switched stadiums, while the Scum has stuck in the rat-and-racoon-infested dump. Nevertheless, Metro's nine wins at DC United trails only their success at Columbus and Dallas (ten each). So let's look at some of those best Metro games at RFK.
10) September 28, 2003: DC United 1, MetroStars 1 (OT)
Alright, so we have to pick a tie to get to ten. Do we go with last year's blistering blast by Wilman Conde? The 0:0 in 2008 when Jaime Moreno missed a late penalty kick? No, let's go with this late comeback, when, with seconds left in regulation, Mark Lisi sent a long free kick that found the head of Mike Magee and tied the game.
9) September 28, 1997: DC United 1, MetroStars 3
Until 2010 (see below), this was the only multiple-goal Metro victory in DC. It came on the last day of the regular season, but unfortunately, Metro had already been eliminated from the playoffs. Brian Kelly, Giovanni Savarese and Miles Joseph scored, and each provided an assist as well.
8) May 12, 1996: DC United 1, MetroStars 1 (1:2 SO)
In the first meeting between the two teams, Savarese continued his early-season spree, tying the game in the second half. Nicola Caricola and Ruben Dario Hernandez scored in the shootout, and the rivalry is born.
7) September 6, 1996: DC United 1, MetroStars 2
Metro ended up sweeping the regular seasons series at RFK as Antony De Avila scored the opener and set up Joseph for the winner. An epic playoff series would commence later that month.
6) August 15, 2001: DC United 1, MetroStars 2
Tim Howard had a spectacular match, with a number of late saves to preserve the Metro lead. New York goals came from Rodrigo Faria and Mark Chung. DC answered through future Metro Lisi, but Howard made sure that no more shall pass.
5) May 1, 2010: DC United 0, New York 2
It took Metro 14 years to win in DC by a shutout, and they do so in an easy fashion, leaving RFK after goals by Salou Ibrahim and Juan Pablo Angel, the second on a header off a Joel Lindpere free kick.
4) October 8, 2005: DC United 1, MetroStars 2
Badly needing points in the penultimate regular season game, Metros went up early on a Sergio Galvan Rey goal before DC tied it late in the first half. Seth Stammler became an unlikely hero, following his own blocked cross with a perfect ball that found on onrushing Youri Djorkaeff, who slammed it home for Metro.
3) April 22, 2000: DC United 2, MetroStars 3 (OT)
In the game that started the 2000 resurgence and saw the debut of Steve Jolley, Metro took the early lead though a Jeff Agoos own goal. Before the first half was over, DC would get two, and the Metros responded after an Adolfo Valencia cross found Petter Villegas. Valencia's ejection in the second half saw Metro bunker for the rest of the match, and then enter the first overtime in the club's MLS regular season history. In the 94th minute, Lothar Matthaus' long free kick bounced in the box and was headed in by Mike Petke for the golden goal victory.
2) April 21, 2011: DC United 0, New York 4
Metro rode into RFK and destroyed the Scum, behind two goals by Thierry Henry, and one each from Lindpere and Juan Agudelo, the latter a juggling wonder. Jan Gunnar Solli recorded three primary assists (the league would later take one away, but we know better) and Metro got its biggest road win in 15 years.
1) July 5, 2003: DC United 2, MetroStars 3 (OT)
Down to ten men since the 35th minute, the Metros held off a charging DC squad to end regulation in a draw with goals coming from Metro-for-a-year Moreno and Ricardo Clark. Then, Bob Bradley pulled the old switcheroo, putting Eddie Gaven, in only his second career game, into the nets for less than a minute to start overtime. Howard made an incredible save to keep the game tied, and then Gaven raced down the sideline and notches the game-winner.
