Metro struggles with incompetent Toronto, 0:0
July 20, 2013
It's a good thing that Metro was playing such an terrible club, for today's performance in Toronto was nothing to write home about. A week after dominating least-leading Montreal, Metro couldn't do much against the lesser of the Canadian clubs. Thankfully, the incompetence of the home team show, and the game ended 0:0.
Mike Petke started the same lineup as last week, but, alas, the aplomb was gone. Early in the game, Titi Henry was presented with a good scoring opportunity when a Kosuke Kimura cross was deflected directly to him. Unfortunately, the Frenchman's shot went directly at the Toronto goalkeeper.
In the 13th minute, Toronto looked to have scored, but the goal was correctly called offside. A minute after, it was time for Tim Cahill's header to be called back. Those were the only times the balls would find the back of the net today.
Metro could have had two penalty kicks in the first half. First, the ball clearly hit off the hand of a Toronto defender. Then, Eric Alexander was brutally taken down in the box. The referee Jorge Gonzalez decided to play on both occasions.
Metro's second half was even worse than the first, as no chances were generated until injury time. Luis Robles and the defense had to do their part, and were helped by the complete uselessness of Toronto's misfiring attackers. Robles was excellent in the nets, commanding the penalty area. He did have to make a huge save, stretching on a deflected shot that looked destined for the top corner.
Let's hope the incompetence doesn't rub off...
Lineup: Robles, Kimura, Olave, Holgersson, Barklage, McCarty, Steele, Alexander, Cahill, Espindola, Henry. Subs: Obekop, Luyindula, Bustamante.
