Metro declines options on Barklage, Carney
November 25, 2013 (Official Press Release)
The New York Red Bulls announced today that they will not be picking up team contract options for defenders Brandon Barklage and David Carney. Carney is eligible for today's MLS Waiver Draft while Barklage is eligible for the MLS Re-Entry Process taking place in December.
"First, we want to thank Brandon and David for their service to our club. Both were top professionals and contributed to our success this season in helping us win our first Supporters' Shield," said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. "However, with this success comes the unfortunate challenge of making difficult decisions due to salary cap and personnel considerations. We wish both of them the best of luck."
After winning a spot on the roster, Barklage signed with New York on March 5, 2012. Playing most of his two seasons at fullback, Barklage appeared in a total of 45 games (36 of which were starts) and amassed two goals and 10 assists. Prior to joining New York, Barklage was a member of D.C. United for three seasons.
Carney was signed by New York on August 8, 2013. The Australian international started in seven games and New York's two playoff matches. Prior to coming to MLS, Carney was most recently with Uzbekistan's FC Bunyodkor.
