Media Day with Bradley Wright-Phillips
March 4, 2014
MetroFanatic: Bradley, your father is Ian Wright...
Bradley Wright-Phillips: Yeah.
MF: Who once held the goal-scoring record for Arsenal...
BWP: He did, until Thierry. (laughs)
MF: So, do you feel any animosity toward Thierry?
BWP: No, no, he's a good guy to take it, he is a great player. If someone was gonna break it...
MF: What about your dad, does he have any animosity?
BWP: Nah, nah, he likes him, he is a friend of him too. They got respect for each other. It's better a great player than somebody lucky.
MF: They got a statue of Thierry at Arsenal.
BWP: They should have done one of my dad, right?
MF: I was gonna ask you that!
BWP: (laughs) I gotta say that, I gotta say that! It's a great honor for Thierry to get a statue at a club like Arsenal, but there are no bad feelings.
MF: You played in the Premiership, and lower divisions, why did you decide to come to MLS?
BWP: Because I came here, I was just waiting to see what offers I had in England. I came in, on trial, just to train with the boys. But I came here, I didn't want to leave. It's an amazing place, amazing players, and good staff.
MF: Playing with Thierry is probably pretty good, too.
BWP: Yeah, it's good. I grew up an Arsenal fan for obvious reasons.
MF: Of course.
BWP: Getting to play with Henry is quality. Now, I just hope to learn stuff off him.
MF: What about your brother? There were some rumblings a couple of months ago that he wants to join you.
BWP: He would love to come to America and play here. But he's got a contract in England, I don't know what's gonna happen with him. If he comes, it'll be good. It'll be good to play alongside him.
MF: Well, your name is pretty long already, and if they put a B in front of it...
BWP: (laughs) Yeah, they'll have to put an S or a B... I'm not changing mine, he's not changing his! He's smaller, so I'll bully him!
MF: Speaking of the back of the shirt, you stayed with 99, didn't switch to 9?
BWP: When I was younger, 99 was a very exciting number. 99 was a very good year.
MF: Not for this team, this team had a horrible year.
BWP: Oh yeah?
MF: Dead last.
BWP: Well, we gotta change that. 99 is good, it's a good luck number.
MF: In the playoffs, you score that goal, and everyone things it's smooth sailing, and then the rest happens...
BWP: It's football in general. It's soccer in general, it's ups and downs. We learned from that, from that loss, and we'll get better.
