Media Day with Lloyd Sam
March 4, 2014
MetroFanatic: Lloyd, you had a pretty impressive record last year. Pretty much every shot you took went in.
Lloyd Sam: (laughs)
MF: How?
LS: How? I guess I choose my moments wisely. I'm often the player that looks for the pass. I try and create first. I'm proud of that record though. I think it was seven shots, five goals.
MF: It's amazing. It's the league record. Seven shots, five shots on goal, five goals. It's beyond amazing.
LS: What can I say, I'm really proud of that record.
MF: And it includes one of the biggest goals in franchise history. Talk about the goal for the Supporters Shield.
LS: First of all it was this man, next to me (points to Peguy Luyindula) that ran it down the field, played it to me. And that's my favorite move, fake to shoot. I've done it a couple of times. And then, it just opened up, on my left, and I put it in. It was a great feeling. At that point, it went to 3:1, it gave us a bit of breathing space, and got us silverware, which is a big thing for this club. For me, myself, the club, everyone. It was a great feeling.
MF: You played in the Premiership, elsewhere in England... Why America?
LS: Why America? I didn't really know much about it. I knew about New York City, so there was interest. Let me come over, come see. I had just left Leeds, and at the time, I wasn't really happy with English football, just the way things have gone. At first, I thought, let me come over to America for a little bit, and then go back. And then I had an injury, and I stayed next year. And now, I really like it over here.
MF: Last year, Eric and you alternated on the right flank. Is that gonna be the case this year?
LS: We're players that can play multiple positions. Eric can play in the middle and on the right and on the left. I can play on the right and the left.
MF: There's also a lack of depth up front.
LS: We got a lot of players who can play different positions. Peguy can play it, Tim can play it. It's good when you can move people around.
MF: So if you were not happy with English football, are you happy with American soccer?
LS: I'm really excited for this season. I'm happy to be in New York. I'm happy to see the same familiar faces from last season.
MF: Well, with this franchise, that has never been the case.
LS: Yeah, yeah.
MF: Every offseason, except for this one, it's constant turnover.
LS: That's a big thing that everyone is happy about. We all know each other, so that's nice. And I'm happy that we're go into the season, give it a go. I'm excited.
