Metros lose lead, tie Quakes 1:1
April 27, 2002
The Metros earned their first draw of the year, tying San Jose 1:1. The result marks the third straight year that these two teams tied in Giants Stadium. The Metro goal, scored by Clint Mathis, was the first goal scored against the San Jose franchise since they changed the name from the Clash. The Metros are still winless against this team since 1998.
Clint's goal, in his last game before departing for the World Cup, came in the 55th minute. Diego Serna received the ball close to the Columbus goal, and, with his back turned, flicked it over the defender to an onrushing Mathis. Clint easily converted for his second goal of the year.
San Jose replied in the 72nd minute as Ariel Graziani scored after Birahim Diop, making his MLS debut, failed to clear the ball. Petter Villegas then saved the game in the 90th minute, saving the ball of the line. There was no scoring in overtime, although the Metros tried to push for a win.
Darin Lewis made his MetroStar debut as a second-half sub.
Lineup: Howard, Diop, Addo, Petke, Hernandez, Paule, Davis, Villegas, Mathis, Serna, Faria. Subs: Lewis, Kamler, Perez.
