Minor-league Cosmos win NY "derby", 3:0
June 14, 2014
A few days ago, Mike Petke came out and said it. "Austria doesn't understand the Open Cup." Take it at face value.
At first look, this was not the debacle that the 2011 showing was (Hans Backe staying at home, the team losing 4:0). Petke did start quite possibly the best lineup once you discount international absences, injuries, and turf-related worries. But tonight, in the "hyped" New York "derby", only one team showed up, and it wasn't the major leaguers.
The Cosmos played like the game meant something. Metro played like it was a nuisance. And maybe it was; after all, if you don't win the Open Cup, the whole experience could be considered rather worthless. And yet, seeing the ball bounce on the horrible turf amongst all those lacrosse lines, seeing the minor leaguers knock three in (it could have been more), one couldn't help but feel that with the trophy case still rather bare, this club can't afford to give away any chances for hardware.
Well, let's hope that Austria understands the MLS Cup...
Lineup: Meara, Oyongo, Armando, Miazga, Duvall, Sekagya, Steele, Alexander, Sam, Luyindula, Wright-Phillips. Subs: Akpan, Convey, Bustamante.
