Metro can't finish, finished off by Scum, 2:0
August 31, 2014
If only Bradley Wright-Phillips put that header just an inch higher... If only Tim Cahill hit that shot just a tad to the right... If only...
The 2:0 final scoreline in the loss to the Scum seems inappropriate to the game that was played. The difference was that Metro couldn't finish their chances; DC could.
Metro went back to a 4-4-2, with Ambroise Oyongo stepping back into midfield as Eric Alexander sat. DC has some of the better moments early on, and Luis Robles was called to make a terrific jumping save to smother the Scum breakaway.
But midway through the first half, the Metro offense started clicking. Numerous chances were created... if only one could find the back of the net. The best two were a Wright-Phillips up close header that was parried by Scum keeper Bill Hamid, and a long shot from Cahill. The Australian had time to pick the corner, but the ball rang off the post.
After continuous domination in the beginning of the second half, the Scum got one against the run of play. In the 57th, off a goal kick, DC sent the ball forward, over the head of Ibrahim Sekagya. As the Ugandan was ball watching, the ball dropped to Luis Silva. Robles came out of the net, whiffed, and the Scum easily connected.
Metro continued to press, but good work on the flanks, especially from Lloyd Sam, went unrewarded. Then, in injury time... well, whatever. Scum scored. If only it mattered at that point...
This year is turning into a season of if only.
