BWP gets record, Metro gets home playoff game
October 26, 2014
Playoff seeding? Who cares about playoff seeding! Let's talk about Bradley Wright-Phillips!
27 goals! We knew he got the Golden Boot, but 27 goals! This is a hallowed MLS record, and BWP now owns a share. 27!
He needed two to tie the record coming into tonight. He got the two, in brilliant fashion. The first came in the 15th minute, when Eric Alexander sent the ball forward, and it was touched by KC's clueless Kevin Ellis. Wright-Phillips pounced, took a touch, and sliced it into the net. The record was now one away.
He got it in the 70th. A long pass up the left flank found BWP against KC's supposedly stellar Aurelien Collin. Like Duke of Wellington at Waterloo, Wright-Phillips proclaimed England's supremacy over France. Collin didn't know what hit him, as BWP stole the ball from under him and took it to the middle. Another KC defender tracked back to stand in front of the Metro attacker, but Wright-Phillips deftly put it past both him and the clueless goalkeeper. It was a fantastic way to write yourself into the MLS record books.
So now, it's the always-dreaded play-in game, to be played for the first time at Red Bull Arena. The opponent? The same KC team that Metro had such an easy time today. Will RBA's 0-for-postseason streak finally be broken? Will BWP continue his tear? Who knows. Tonight, let's celebrate his accomplishment.
27 goals!
Lineup: Robles, Miller, Olave, Sekagya, Eckersley, McCarty, Alexander, Oyongo, Sam, Cahill, Wright-Phillips. Subs: Bover, Perrinelle, Lade.
