Goodnight, Tim Cahill
February 2, 2015
George: I had 'em, Jerry. They loved me. Jerry: And then? George: I lost them. I can usually come up with one good comment during a meeting, but by the end it's buried under a pile of gaffes and bad puns. Jerry: Showmanship, George. When you hit that high note, you say goodnight and walk off.
If Tim Cahill left Metro after the 2013 season, he would have gone down as one of the greatest players in team history. That high note, the Supporters Shield, was hit. Cahill's contributions to it were unmatched: oh, sure, 11 goals and five assists, but what goals! It was an MVP season to rank up there with other MVP seasons in team history. It was the stuff of legends.
But Tim Cahill stayed through 2014, and let's just say that the notes of last year weren't exactly high. Somehow he managed to score as many goals during Australia's short World Cup run as he did during Metro's regular season. And it wasn't just the missing scoring touch: apparent clashes with the coaching staff, pouting at his diminished role, clearly putting country above club, even for meaningless friendlies... It was the stuff of nightmares.
Now, he is gone, and everyone seems to be better off. Cahill can go move on for a cash grab in a lesser league, and RBNY can rid themselves of not only a massive headcase, but a massive contract. And yet...
Cahill's 2013 was amazing, wasn't it? How can anyone forget the last-second winner over LA off a Juninho (Ha! Juninho!) free kick? Or the last-second, playoff-clinching header versus New England? Or the fastest goal in league history in Houston? Or what he brought, on and off the field, game in and game out?
You should have said goodnight and walked off after that 2013 season, Tim Cahill.
