Metro shakes up Quakes, 2:0
April 17, 2015
The scoreboard said 2:0, but that doesn't relay the story of the game. It was 90 minutes of complete, utter domination, as Metro had their way with San Jose. Sacha Kljestan scored his first Metro goal and Mike Grella added the second.
Jesse Marsch elected not to make any changes from last week's lineup, and the consistency paid off. Metro looked like a team in sync in every area of the field. How dominant was the performance? Luis Robles wasn't forced to make a difficult save until ten minutes left in the game. By then, it was all but academic.
Kljestan's goal came in the 29th minute. Felipe swung the ball from the right side to the middle of the box, where it was touched by Bradley Wright-Phillips. Kljestan's ended up with it, and easily converted.
Six minutes later, Lloyd Sam crossed the ball in front of the net, and Grella got on the end of it. The once-MLS-hater knocked it in from close range.
Metro had many other chances to score. A blast from Wright-Phillips from the edge of the box was tipped over by the San Jose keeper. Late in the game, BWP tapped the ball in front of the net that just missed wide. But those opportunities were not rued; tonight, they were not even needed.
Let's hope we see more of this in the games that follow...
Sean Davis made his first-team debut as a late sub.
Lineup: Robles, Lawrence, Perrinelle, Miazga, Duvall, McCarty, Martins, Kljestan, Grella, Sam, Wright-Phillips. Subs: Zizzo, Richards, Davis.
