Chile's Santiago Dittborn on trial
July 30, 2015
Better late than never! On the heels of the Shaun Wright-Phillips signing and reports indicating Gonzalo Veron will become the team's second designated player, Chilean international Santiago Dittborn has arrived in Harrison for a trial stint.
With six caps for the South American nation to his name, the former Universidad Catolica player is in demand, having just completed a trial with the Philadelphia Worms. It is unclear if Philly has ceased negotiations with the Santiago native and/or has retained some manner of MLS squatters' rights (aka discovery claim).
Dittborn has been most frequently deployed as a left midfielder, potentially adding to the sudden logjam of players capable of playing on the left wing in Jesse Marsch's 4-2-3-1 formation.
If successful, Dittborn wouldn't be the first former Universidad Catolica player in the Metro ranks -- beloved goalkeeper Jonny Walker called the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo home from 1998 to 2002.
