If there is one weakness in what has so far been a successful season, it's Metro's susceptibility on counter-attacks. When the beloved high press works, everything is great, but if it gets broken... then we can get what happened tonight. In the supposed fortress of Red Bull Arena, the home side got spanked by expansion Orlando, 5:2.
After the changes last week, Jesse Marsch reverted. Connor Lade and Dax McCarty came back from suspension for Sal Zizzo and Sean Davis. Mike Grella and Lloyd Sam slid in for Shaun Wright-Phillips and Gonzalo Veron.
After Metro dominated possession in the early stages of the match, Orlando struck in the 24th minute. A perfectly placed corner kick from Kaka was whipped into the net by Cyle Larin.
As we have often seen this season, Metro quickly answered. Five minutes after the opening goal, an exquisitely executed free kick saw Sacha Kljestan find Matt Miazga in the box. The defender headed it into the open area, where a diving McCarty headed in his first of the year.
Orlando went ahead in the 43rd. With most Metros caught upfield, the counterattack found space in the defense, and Larin gave his team the lead again. Metro had two chances to even it before the break, but first a McCarty header and then a Bradley Wright-Phillips shot hit the woodwork.
A minute into the second half, another Orlando counter-attack found acres of space, and ended with Damien Perrinelle sliding the ball into his own net. Metro got closer in the 58th when Veron found Sam in the center of the box. The Englishman spun around, and slotted home. Unfortunately, three minutes later Larin got his third, once again with the entire Metro team caught upfield.
Things got worse when Miazga got his second yellow and walking papers in the 77th. The final goal came from Bryan Rochez, three minutes into injury time.
So is this setback just a blip on Metro's drive to the top, or a sign of things to come? We'll find out soon enough. What, are we worried?...
