Ten Best: Metro vs DC Scum
November 4, 2015
20 years of hate! This is not the first time we picked Metro's ten best wins against the Scum: we did so in 2006 and then in 2011. And now, locked in the sixth playoff series between the two, it seems like a good time to revisit the list.
Picking a top 10 is not easy... we had to leave off Lloyd Sam's late winner last year, the playoff push road win from 2005 that featured foals from Sergio Galvan Rey and Youri Djorkaeff, as well as Metro's first road shutout win at RFK back in 2010. You will also note that last week's playoff game is missing as well... let's see if this list will need further updating soon.
10) June 24, 2012: New York 3, DC United 2
The Brandon Barklage game. Metro went down less than a minute in, but ex-Scum Barklage made his old teammates pay. The unheralded defender scored two -- his only Metro and MLS goals -- and what beauties they were. One was a long blast, the second a ninja-like move to grab the lead. Jan Gunnar Solli had Metro's third, also his first career MLS goal.
9) August 10, 2008: New York 4, DC United 1
The Scum scored early, but Angel tied it off a direct free kick. Mike Magee gave Metro the lead, and then Angel stripped a Scum defender to extend the advantage. Sinisa Ubiparipovic's first professional goal completed the laugher.
8) April 22, 2000: DC United 2, MetroStars 3 (OT)
In the game that started the 2000 resurgence and saw the debut of Steve Jolley, Metro took the early lead though a Jeff Agoos own goal. Before the first half was over, DC would get two, and the Metros responded after an Adolfo Valencia cross found Petter Villegas. Valencia's ejection in the second half saw Metro bunker for the rest of the match, and then enter the first overtime in the club's MLS regular season history. In the 94th minute, Lothar Matthaus' long free kick bounced in the box and was headed in by Mike Petke for the golden goal victory.
7) August 30, 2015: New York 3, DC United 0
Metro completely dominates the Scum, running circles around DC for the entire match. Bradley Wright-Phillips set up Sam for the opener, then scored twice himself, the first of which came on a blistering volley. The game marked Metro's ascension to the top of the league's standings.
6) October 1, 2003: MetroStars 3, DC United 2
In the Open Cup semifinals at Rutgers, the Metros made the first final in team history. Amado Guevara scored the Metros' first two goals, but it was John Wolyniec who played hero, scoring the team's third with just two minutes left in regulation.
5) April 21, 2011: DC United 0, New York 4
Metro rode into RFK and destroyed the Scum, behind two goals by Thierry Henry, and one each from Joel Lindpere and Juan Agudelo, the latter a juggling wonder. Solli recorded three primary assists (the league would later take one away, but we know better) and Metro got its biggest road win in 15 years.
4) July 5, 2003: DC United 2, MetroStars 3 (OT)
Down to ten men since the 35th minute, the Metros held off a charging DC squad to end regulation in a draw. Then, Bob Bradley pulled the old switcheroo, putting Eddie Gaven, in only his second career game, into the nets for less than a minute to start overtime. Tim Howard made an incredible save to keep the game tied. Then, Gaven raced down the sideline and notched the game-winner. Jaime Moreno (spit) and Ricardo Clark had the other Metro goals.
3) September 24, 1996: MetroStars 2, DC United 2 (6:5 SO)
In the first playoff game in Metro history, Savarese tied the match at twos in the 75th after coming onto the field just a minute earlier (De Avila scored the first Metro goal). Then, an epic shootout ensued, and the injured Peter Vermes hobbled and scored in the 11th frame to give the Metros the win.
2) May 5, 2001: MetroStars 3, DC United 2
Down by two in the 79th minute, it looked like everything was doomed. But the MetroStars scored three in a terrific span as first Clint Mathis, then Rodrigo Faria in the 88th, and then Villegas in the 90th each knock one in to pull out the most incredible regulation win in Metro history.
1) November 11, 2014: New York 2, DC United 0
It was hard to unseat that 11-minute comeback, but here we have it. For the first time ever, Metro beat DC Scum in a playoff series, which started with this emphatic, dominating win. Henry backheeled to Wright-Phillips for the first, and Peguy Luyindula etched his status as a playoff legend by scoring the second, again with Henry assisting. A week later, Luyindula would score again in DC, and, for the first time ever (hopefully, not the last), Metro ended the Scum's season.
