Late Rapid goal ties Metros in Denver
April 14, 2001
Pedro Alvarez scored in his first start as a MetroStar, but the goal didn't stand as Marcelo Balboa replied in the 83rd minute to deny the Metros three points.
Alvarez's first goal as a Metro came on a long range shot in the 19th minute. A ball played by Clint Mathis rebounded off a Colorado defender and came back to Alvarez, who blasted it at the net. The ball then deflected off Balboa, giving the Metros a 1:0 lead.
Colorado had a number of chances to level the score, but could not finish after many pathetic efforts by newcomer Neathon Gibson. Unfortunately, in the 83rd minute, the crafty John Spencer found Balboa, whose shot found the back of the net.
Colorado had a number of chances to win the game, only to be denied by Tim Howard, who was excellent throughout, making a huge diving save late to preserve the result. The Metros also wasted a fair number of chances, but in the end should be somewhat happy with a 1:1 draw.
Lineup: Howard, Petke, Hernandez, Jolley, Chung, Williams, Alvarez, Villegas, Ramos, Mathis, Valencia. Subs: Faria, Perez.
