Media Day with Shaun Wright-Phillips
March 2, 2016
MetroFanatic: Shaun, you played for some pretty big teams, but then chose to come here. Other than your brother, why?
Shaun Wright-Phillips: Like I said before, I was here for my brother's wedding, and I wanted to keep fit. I was not under contract, and funny enough, Jesse invited me to train, and one thing led to another. I was training for a month, it felt like I've been here for a year, so it was hard...
MF: I'm sure you had options in England, or elsewhere in the world...
SWP: Yeah, but I felt like I was happy, I felt at home. It reminded me when I was a young player at Manchester City, the whole club, a family. What they've done here is a pretty awesome job. It's nice to be a part of something like this.
MF: When you stepped on the field in Philly, and that assist to your brother, that was a pretty special moment...
SWP: Yeah, like I always say, sometimes it's just timing, just fell like it was supposed to happen. It was just nice to come on, create problems, and create chances, and inevitable, I cross it, my brother finishes it. For me, it went as a dream.
MF: Let's take it back to the 2010 World Cup, you're playing against Americans. Any good memories, bad memories?
SWP: Yes, bad memories, me missing the chance! It was quite never-wrecking, because that was my first big tournament. I took a lot of experience from that. Funny enough, Jesse was the assistant coach for USA.
MF: So you never even thought about playing in America until this random event, Bradley's wedding?
SWP: Not at the point, I always said that it would be nice to play in MLS one day, but at that point, I never thought that would happen at that time.
MF: In England, do some players think MLS is a retirement league? You ever heard Gerrard say that the level of play is so much better than he expected, he should have prepared more. Is that the perception, or is it changing?
SWP: I think now that Sky Sports shows a lof of the games, people are becoming more aware of this. In a way, I can say that we was naive, because we never ever got the time to sit down and watch it. It was never really on TV for us to view. Now that people are viewing it, they can actually see it. When I came, because my brother is here, I obviously always speak to my brother, I knew what I was coming to, I didn't expect it to be easy. It was a challenge for me, to help the club achieve its goals. I never had intentions to come in as a retirement. Lampard, Gerrard, Cole, de Jong, nobody has come here as a retirement. They all came here to basically work and achieve.
