Media Day with Sal Zizzo
March 2, 2016
MetroFanatic: Sal, we're gonna talk about your little reality show to begin with. Now, I haven't seen it...
Sal Zizzo: I wouldn't say it's a middle-aged man TV show...
MF: Are you calling me a middle-aged man? I'm what... 38?
SZ: (laughs) I've seen the demographics...
MF: So what, it's younger women?
SZ: Yeah, and older women, they like the baby talk.
MF: So what made you do it?
SZ: It was an opportunity that came to us, actually towards the end of my time in Kansas City. We figured out that we were gonna do it, and they were wondering, what city are we gonna be in, and it turned out to be New York. It filmed a lot during last season, and it's over now.
MF: You got taken by NYC in the expansion draft, and pretty much almost immediately traded. Where you ever a member of the blue team?
SZ: It's funny, I was actually on a cruise ship, and I found the news while I was on the dollar-every-second Internet. I was just checking, oh, the expansion draft happened today, let me check it out, and then I saw my name, and NYCFC, and then I logged out. So for four hours, I was like, I guess I'm going to New York City, telling everybody.
MF: Well, you were, just the other side of New York City.
SZ: And then my agent emailed me, hey you just got traded, but he didn't say where, and I'm like oh my god, I need to go on the Internet! And in my head, I'm thinking, a cool city like New York City, and now all of the sudden, I don't know where I'm going.
MF: So there are places you would NOT want to go?
SZ: To be honest, Red Bull didn't even cross my mind. It was New York City, and then it was taken away, so I didn't think, oh, New York City again. When it happened, I was like, oh, still New York City. I'm glad I'm here, I love the city, I love the staff, I love the front office, the fans, the stadium, everything about the club.
MF: You were an attacking player, but you became the right back.
SZ: I wish a coach would have seen that when I was younger, the way I play, and my attributes, it kinda fits the style of this system a lot. I really started to come into my own back there and I feel very comfortable.
MF: You made the decision when you were younger to go to Europe over MLS. Was that the right decision, in hindsight?
SZ: At the time, it was difficult. Coming out of college, playing in the U-20 World Cup, and then getting an offer like that. A young player always aspires to go to Europe, and thinks that's the best route. At the time, it did teach me a lot. I learned a lot as a young player going to a country where I don't speak the language. It's a lot of hard work and a lot of things that don't always go your way. With that being said, I learned how to deal with a lot of tough times in your career, and when something is good, you learn to appreciate it. And this is kinda what I have here, I think. I couldn't be happier to be with this team.
