Metro dominated by DC Scum, 2:0
May 13, 2016
Last year, Metro dominated DC Scum. In four of the five games, they won by shutout, outplaying their rivals in every area of the field. Even the one game they didn't win saw a two-goal comeback for a miraculous last-minute tie. Last year, these two teams weren't even in the same league.
But this is not last year. Metro's defense continues to be in shambles, its offense continues to struggle, and the hole they dug themselves at the beginning of the season just got deeper. There would be no two-goal comeback tonight; DC won 2:0. What makes it even sadder is that for the entire second half, with Metro down, they really did not create any good chances to score...
Jesse Marsch made two changes from last week, inserting now-healthy Gonzalo Veron for Lloyd Sam. Chris Duvall (who, as the theme keeps continuing, is NOT a central defender), stepped in for again-injured Ronald Zubar. (Buy him out already, Ali Curtis!)
The Scum broke through in the 20th minute. A through ball found Marcelo Sarvas, who raced through Metro defenders and into the box. Sarvas centered it no Alvaro Saborio, who was offside on the initial pass, but the flag was not raised. Saborio easily converted.
Metro did have their share of chances in the first half. A Bradley Wright-Phillips bicycle kick went straight at the goalie. Veron, who made a number of dangerous runs, barely missed from tough angle. A flying header from Dax McCarty was parried as well, as was an acrobatic kick from Felipe.
Two minutes before the end of the half, a DC cross flew over the penalty area, four Metro defenders, and ended with Patrick Nyarko, who volleyed it in from close range. Just like that, it was 2:0. Kemar Lawrence did see the whistle; Marsch pulled him, as both goals originated on his side.
Metro could do absolutely nothing in the second half. In fact, DC had the best chances, but a couple of fantastic saves from Luis Robles prevented the scoreline from getting out of hand. Metro was just not able to break through DC's stack in the penalty area. When your best opportunity is a long-range Connor Lade shot... you're not doing well.
So right now, Metro faces a two-game week which looks like it will make or break the season. Wait, that's not right. It will not MAKE the season, but it can certainly make it even more broken.
It's not last year, that's for sure.
Lineup: Robles, Lawrence, Collin, Duvall, Zizzo, McCarty, Martins, Kljestan, Grella, Veron, Wright-Phillips. Subs: Lade, Sam, Muyl.
