Another win, another shutout, 2:0 over Seattle
June 19, 2016
Playing its first league game in three weeks, Metro continued to hum along, dropping Seattle 2:0. The win and shutout were the fourth consecutive in MLS play, and fifth in all competitions. Mike Grella had both Metro goals, as the team evened its win-loss record for the first time all year.
Jesse Marsch elected to rest Aurelien Collin, starting Chris Duvall instead. Lloyd Sam regained his usual position at the expense of the suspended Gonzalo Veron. The rest of the lineup carried forward from the last league game.
The scoring was opened in the 18th minute. Sacha Kljestan sent a curving shot from the left side that ricocheted off the right post. Grella, standing unmarked in the center of the box, got hold of the rebound and easily placed it into the net.
There were some testy moments the rest of the first half, but Seattle's lack of finishing skill made us remember Metro's empty performances from earlier this year. In the 59th, a Lloyd Sam through ball was touched back by Seattle's Brad Evans. Grella pounced on it, and deftly chipped the goalkeeper from the top of the box.
Collin was inserted soon after, as Metro switched to 5-4-1, ending any hope for the visitors. The rest of the game was a clinical defensive performance, as the once seemingly-doomed club keeps climbing and climbing.
Lineup: Robles, Lade, Zubar, Duvall, Zizzo, McCarty, Martins, Kljestan, Grella, Sam, Wright-Phillips. Subs: Collin, Muyl, Baah.
