On October 27, 2013, Metro was leading the Fire 2:1 early in the second half. You know the story: a win and only a win would get the first important trophy in team history. Off a Fire corner kick, Luis Robles got the hold of the ball and tossed it far to Peguy Luyindula. The Frenchman carried it upfield and sent it to Lloyd Sam. A cut to his left, a bending shot, and there it was: a two-goal lead. The Shield now seemed possible. It became reality soon after.

There were goals and assists before and after, but this will stand the test of time. The eventual game-winner for the Shield? One might make the case it's the most important goal in team history. And Sam scored it.

That regular season, Sam placed five shots on goal. All of them ended up in the net. This year, he connected on 100% as well... alas, it was a solitary one.

So is this the case of dumping a player who is past his prime? A desire to give more playing time to a rookie and a DP? An attempt to collect allocation money for an important signing? All of the above? Only the junta in charge know for sure. One thing for certain: we will not wish Sam good luck in his new surroundings. Oh, why did it have to be DC?
