Ten Best: 1:0 victories
October 5, 2016
Prior to last weekend's 3:2 triumph, Metro's last four victories all shared the same scoreline: 1:0. So let's browse through history and remember the best and most important such games...
10) September 18, 1996: MetroStars 1, Columbus 0
Metro's first playoff clinch came in the penultimate game of the inaugural regular season. Played on the ping-pong turf, Antony De Avila ran onto a bouncing ball, and raced through the penalty area, slotting it in.
9) September 15, 2016: New York 1, Alianza 0
The last-minute winner in a CONCACAF game pretty much assured Metro's qualification for Champions League quarterfinals for the first time in history. Sacha Kljestan with the goal, of course.
8) October 20, 2011: New York 1, Philadelphia 0
In the last game of the 2011 regular season, Metro needed a win to guarantee a playoff spot. A win they got, off a deflected Dane Richards shot that came early in the match. The defense played superbly to advance.
7) September 16, 2006: New York 1, Columbus 0
Oh, what could have been! 16-year-old Jozy Altidore, playing in just his second league match, blasted a goal that proved vital in Metro's playoff push. The game was marred by three red cards.
6) October 2, 2010: New York 1, Kansas City 0
A win guaranteed a playoff spot, and a win Metro got. Just six minutes in, Richards scored off a throw-in. Bouna Coundoul played the game of his lifetime to preserve the shutout.
5) March 27, 2010: New York 1, Chicago 0
Just an opening season win? It was much more than that. Joel Lindpere scored the first goal ever at Red Bull Arena, ushering a new era of winning Metro soccer.
4) July 8, 2000: Kansas City 0, MetroStars 1
A fantastic game between two of the best MLS teams, it featured a fantastic performance in goal by Tim Howard, who stopped everything the Wiz threw at him. A late goal by Clint Mathis made Metro fans believe that all is possible.
3) November 1, 2015: DC United 0, New York 1
A playoff victory in DC? Hell, yes! Metro dominated defensively, and the lone goal came on a header by Dax McCarty. A week later, Metro would earn the sweep... with another 1:0 win.
2) September 20, 2003: MetroStars 1, Columbus 0
A scoreless tie nine minutes into overtime. Three points are necessary for the playoff push. An Amado Guevara free kick in the from behind the halfway line. A perfect pass that ends on the foot of Wolyniec and gets one-timed into the upper right corner of the net. Victory. Pandemonium. One of the greatest goals. Ever.
1) November 15, 2008: Salt Lake 0, New York 1
The most important goal in Metro history? In the MLS Cup semifinals in Utah, Dave van den Bergh tallied off a Wolyniec pass. Danny Cepero and the goalposts took care of the rest. One game, one goal, one win, one trip to MLS Cup.
