The definition of insanity

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results." -- Albert Einstein
Last offseason, Metro was faced with a conundrum. Damien Perrinelle suffered a long-term injury. Matt Miazga was sold off to Chelsea. Ronald Zubar was still Ronald Zubar. Clearly, at least two central defenders had to be signed. One was: Gideon Baah, from a recommendation by now-departed Lloyd Sam (so much for actual scouting).
You know what happened next: Zubar got injured (as expected), Baah got injured, Metro was forced to start Karl Ouimette, as well as try Kemar Lawrence and Chris Duvall in the center of defense. After leaking goals and losing six out of seven league games, they finally acquired a defender. Thankfully for Metro, Aurelien Collin fell out of flavor at Orlando, and was picked up for peanuts. He proceeded to stabilize the defense, whenever partner by Zubar (who would get injured again), Baah (who would get injured again), or Perrinelle (who was clearly lost a step after suffering the injury).
Flash forward to this offseason. Zubar's option was not picked up. Perrinelle's contract has expired. Baah is coming off a series of injuries. Thankfully, Collin has been re-signed, but it looks like Metro is in dire need of central defenders... again. Now, there are still a chance that Zubar and Perrinelle could return, but it feels like it makes sense to move away from that chapter. On the other hand, Zubar and Perrinelle are better than nothing...
Metro heads into preseason this week. The Champions League quarterfinal is a month away. Yes, it's possible (perhaps even likely) that a central defender (or multiple defenders!) will get signed prior to that date. It just seems that in an offseason that has seen every team in the league try to improve itself, Metro is the lone one standing still. Is it possible that they will enter the season with such a glaring hole in central defense? Is it possible that they will do the same thing over and over again?
That would be insane.
