Central defender found: Fidel Escobar?
July 20, 2017
Ever since Gideon Baah was shelved for the year, it became obvious that a central defender is needed. Obvious to everyone but the RBNY brass, that is. For as Aurelien Collin's injuries continued to pop up, and Sal Zizzo was relegated to starting central defense duties, nothing seemed to be happening. Well, something could be happening now.
According to Panama's RPC, Fidel Escobar could be RBNY-bound. The player's agent confirmed to the website that "there are talks", but there is no "signed contract". RPC is reporting that Escobar traveled with Michael Murillo to "New York" after Panama's defeat to Costa Rica in the Gold Cup.
Escobar, 22, was most recently with Sporting Lisbon's B team in Portugal, on loan from Sporting San Miguelito. He started his career at San Francisco FC, where Murillo had played before coming to Metro. Escobar was first capped by Panama in 2015, and also played for his country in that year's U-20 World Cup.
