Ten Best: Metro vs Toronto
October 29, 2017
We've never done Ten Best: Metro vs Toronto? Really? Well, now seems to be a pretty good time for it...
10) June 6, 2007: Toronto 1, New York 2
The first-ever meeting between the two teams was played among seagull feces. The hosts opened the scoring, but Juan Pablo Angel scored directly off a free kick, then added the winner two minutes later.
9) August 12, 2007: New York 3, Toronto 0
The second-ever meeting was an easy win for Metro. Angel scored off a Clint Mathis feed in the first and Jozy Altidore added a second-half brace. Remember when Altidore played for Metro, and not Toronto? Yeah.
8) April 27, 2013: Toronto 1, New York 2
Tim Cahill opened the scoring in the first half, but Toronto equalized late in the second. In the 89th, Titi Henry found Cahill's head, and Metro had the victory.
7) October 11, 2014: New York 3, Toronto 1
Metro needed a win for a late-season playoff push, and got one. Bradley Wright-Phillips got the first. Ruben Bover, in a rare start, scored his only Metro goal. Dax McCarty put the game out of reach just before the halftime whistle.
6) August 15, 2015: New York 3, Toronto 0
Another easy home win for Metro, on the way to the Supporters Shield. Once again, BWP scored first, which was followed by Anthony Wallace. Gonzalo Veron scored his first Metro goal deep in stoppage time.
5) August 21, 2010: Toronto 1, New York 4
Rafa Marquez (barf) scored his first and only Metro goal on a long shot, which was followed by an own goal from Joseph Nane. Toronto crept within one, but Angel nailed a penalty kick to restore the lead. Carl Robinson's first and only Metro goal finished the scoring.
4) October 24, 2009: New York 5, Toronto 0
As abysmal as 2009 was, it sure ended sweetly, with Metro denying Toronto a playoff berth. Mac Kandji and Angel scored twice, with Matthew Mbuta scoring a penalty for the last ever goal at Giants Stadium.
3) May 28, 2016: New York 3, Toronto 0
A first-half BWP hat-trick: a header off a Sacha Kljestan's free kick, and then converting off Kljestan and Felipe passes, made it a very easy match.
2) July 6, 2011: New York 5, Toronto 0
A romp at Red Bull Arena. Titi Henry, Luke Rodgers, Joel Lindpere, and then Juan Agudelo twice, both off Lindpere assists. Toronto was such a joke back then...
1) September 29, 2012: New York 4, Toronto 1
A glorious game for Henry, who set up Metro's first free goals: the first to the head of S. Markus Holgersson, the second with a no-look pass to Kenny Cooper, the third once again to Cooper, this time after juggling it. He then capped the game with a sublime long curve from way outside the box.
