Can we write this game summary without moaning about what happened on Tuesday? You bet!
As Metro has shown this year, when it is firing on all cylinders, it can impose its will on MLS teams. Today, they did just that, dominating Montreal and emerging 3:1 winners. If only...
With all the early-season shuffling, we might have seen what is the beginning of a stable lineup: Luis Robles (duh) in goal, Kemar Lawrence, Aaron Long, Tim Parker, and Michael Murillo on defense, Tyler Adams, Sean Davis, Florian Valot (Marc Rzatkowski is still recovering from a knock), Daniel Royer, and Alejandro Romero Gamarra at midfield, and BWP (duh) up front. If only...
Wright-Phillips opened the scoring just five minutes in. After a turnover in midfield, Valot, who has been a pleasant surprise so far, sprung the Englishman, who blasted it in from the top of the box. Soon after, Royer had a chance to double the lead, but his short follow-up shot was saved off the line.
Montreal evened it on a direct free kick in the 33rd, a shot by Jeisson Vargas that went off the post and in. The woodwork didn't do Metro any favors, as Royer hit it minutes later, but it bounced out.
Metro came out firing in the second half, and got the lead in the 57th. After Evan Bush came out of goal to thwart BWP, the Englishman recovered the ball and sent it back to Romero Gamarra. The Argentine's blast was his first career MLS goal.
Metro had more chances to extend the lead, and did so in the 76th. Lawrence did well to keep the ball off a corner kick, took it into the box, and sent a goalmouth cross that Murillo easily knocked home. That was all Metro needed, as Montreal rarely threatened.
See, no mention of that other game! If only...
