After scoring a penalty kick with just three minutes left in regulation to tie the game and attacking for most of overtime, the MetroStars were dealt a dramatic setback as DaMarcus "Fireman" Beasley scored six minutes into the extra session to give Chicago a dramatic 3:2 win.

The Metros scored first, in the 14th minute, as Andy Williams connected for his first goal as a Metro, after some nice work in the penalty area by Mamadou Diallo. The score stood until the 53rd, when Wolff scored twice in a two-minute span, first kicking in a free kick into the upper left corner and then slotting another one past Tim Howard in the 55th minute.

Wolff had a chance for a hat-trick when he was judged to be taken down in the box in the 67th minute. But Howard came up big, saving the ensuing penalty kick and keeping the Metros in the game. After numerous attempts to penetrate the Chicago defense fell through, the Metros received a well-earned penalty kick in the 87th minute when Rodrigo Faria has his shirt pulled in the box. Diallo calmly converted.

The Metros continued to push in overtime, but it was Chicago's counterattack that spelled doom for them, as Byron Alvarez lost the ball in midfield, Wolff beat the offside trap, and then found Beasley for the game winner. The overtime loss is Metros' first since the 2000 season.
