Two terrible teams play to a 1:1 tie
September 11, 2021
Throughout the last quarter century, Metro and DC Scum have played numerous memorable games. This was not one of them. A tepid, boring, flaccid affair saw the two long-time rivals tie 1:1 at the ever-empty Red Bull Arena.
Gerhard Struber actually switched it up, switching to a single forward, benching Fabio by adding Dru Yearwood to stack the midfield. And the change looked to have worked just five minutes in, when Patryk Klimala stole the ball on the left sideline, passed it to Yearwood, who hit a low shot from outside the box and into the bottom left corner for his first Metro goal.
And then it stopped working. By "it", we mean everything. If it's not clear by this point that the current strategy cannot generate any offense from the run of play, we don't know what team you've been watching. (In fact, you're probably not watching. Probably best for your sanity.)
DC evened the game in the 44th minute, when VAR decided that Sean Nealis handled the ball in the box. This time, Carlos Coronel did not jump early on the penalty, but this time, he also couldn't save it.
So, with the two old rivals tied, we were in for an exciting second half! Hardly. Omir Fernandez came in at the break, but once again contributed a big fat nothing. Omar Sowe debuted after just signing, but hardly saw the ball. We even saw the return of Youba Diarra... all of that amounted to a hill of beans.
It's not a fair comparison: at least that hill is made up of beans! And beans, although often bland, can provide some nutrition. Metro couldn't provide jack squat. Fortunately, DC couldn't provide jack squat either, and the game ended in a draw.
We say "fortunately", but doesn't really matter? What's a solitary point in a season of despair? Hopefully, soon enough, we will not remember this game at all.
Lineup: Coronel, Gutman, Nealis, Reyes, Edwards, Davis, Tolkin, Yearwood, Clark, Carmona, Klimala. Subs: Fernandez, Fabio, Casseres, Sowe, Diarra.
