New York Red Bulls II defeated Chicago Fire FC II, 5-4 on Sunday, August 27 at MSU Soccer Park to clinch a berth in the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs.

Red Bulls II opened the scoring eight minutes in, as goalkeeper Will Meyer played a ball towards midfield that was immediately flicked on with a header by Frank Ssebuufu. Jorge Cabezas Hurtado received the pass on a breakaway, got around the keeper, and slotted it into the net.

Chicago equalized in the 15th minute, as Alex Monis scored following a collision right outside the box. The visitors took the lead five minutes later, as Omari Glasgow collected a through-ball on the far side of the field, made a run to the end line, and sent in a cross that was tapped in by Billy Hency.

New York leveled the match in the 24th minute, as Ibrahim Kasule capitalized off a loose ball following a shot from midfielder Wiki Carmona.

The home side struck right out of halftime on a header from Ssebuufu following a ball played into the box by O'Vonte Mullings. Two minutes later, Red Bulls II added another following a Chicago turnover. Ssebuufu took the ball away, made a run towards the box, and found midfielder Wiki Carmona, who struck to increase the lead to two.

Chicago scored four minutes later, as Luka Prpa sent the ball into the box on a set piece that was headed in by Andres Ueland.

New York regained the two goal advantage in the 59th minute, as Kasule scored off a rebound following a shot. With his two goals, Kasule has recorded a brace in back-to-back matches.

The visitors struck one final time in the 75th minute as defender Noah Egan scored following a scramble in the box.
