Faria, Howard lead Metros over Dallas, 3:1

Dallas MetroStars
Cerritos Mathis
Faria 2
09.05.02 · League

Who would have thought it? Playing against a team that dominated them all year, the Metros used two goals from Rodrigo Faria and another incredible performance by Tim Howard to beat Dallas, 3:1. Clint Mathis had the first Metro goal, meaning that the Metros are now 17-0-2 when he scores.

Mathis found net just two minutes into the game, as Nelson Akwari, starting at right back for the suspended Ziadie, stole the ball from Dallas. Akwari found Andy Williams, who in turn found Brad Davis, whose cross was redirected by Mathis' now-mohawked-again head past Matt Jordan for a 1:0 lead.

Ronald Cerritos tied the game in the 14th, as the Metros were caught napping on a throw in. Cerritos then had a breakaway stopped by on onrushing Howard, and another ball cleared off the goal line first by Howard and then by Jeff Moore.

Mathis was taken out of the game for the miraculously-recovered Mamadou Diallo in the 60th, but just after he left, Jeff Moore sent a pass through a Dallas defense that found Rodrigo Faria, who sliced the ball past Jordan and give the Metros the lead they will not relinquish.

Faria added another, his 11th of the year (13th if you count Open Cup), in the 73rd, after Davis sent a perfect pass to Diallo in the left corner, who crossed it to Faria's head, the ball ending past a useless Jordan.

The Metros are now tied with Columbus on top of the East with 35 points. Tab Ramos made his first appearance in months by playing the last few minutes of the game.

Lineup: Howard, Chronopoulos, Petke, Jolley, Akwari, Moore, Paule, Davis, Williams, Faria, Mathis. Subs: Diallo, Ramos.
