Media Day with Lewis Morgan
February 20, 2024
MetroFanatic: Lewis, I went to Scotland for the first time last year. I was there only for two days, spent it in Edinburgh and the highlands. Where should have I gone?
Lewis Morgan: Uh... I think you've done it right. I think Edinburgh is obviously the one place I would tell anyone to go in the Highlands if you've got time, but you've only got a couple of days, for sure Edinburgh.
MF: Hairy coos were awesome.
LM: Yeah, for sure they were a big Scottish thing.
MF: Last year you came back, in the midseason and missed a penalty kick and then you were hurt again. Can you take us through that whole experience?
LM: Yeah, I think I just was so desperate to play and contribute to the team and that specific moment, I'm our penalty taker so I'd never missed one in my career. Actually, not many people know but I was so, going into that game, I thought I felt ready for it, but as soon as I actually injured myself on the penalty kick and had surgery thereafter.
MF: So you were healthy and then that happened?
LM: Yeah, I was pretty compromised so I managed to get myself healthy. I was training, everything was going fine, and then actually the penalty kick was the last football I kicked. I took that penalty and then we flew to Minnesota a couple of days later, because on the penalty I injured myself again. It's been a learning curve for me but the main thing is now that I'm back and healthy and ready to go.
MF: You had 14 goals plus a lot more in other competitions and then last year there's a big giant zero and now you're just coming back. People want to see you succeed like two years ago, are you ready to step on the field right now?
LM: I played ten minutes of the last preseason game.
MF: That was awesome. Seeing your name in the lineup... it was s great that Lewis gets to play.
LM: So, obviously, my goal this year is to score more than I did that 2022 season. I feel like I've got some time to make up for, but most importantly is just try to stay healthy. Obviously, I really went through it last year with some injuries and, gladly, I feel much better now and I'm in a better spot for this year.
MF: Talk about the playing with Emil. I'm sure he'll be playing in the midfield, hopefully at the same time.
LM: I don't know how we're going to line up. Obviously Emil coming in is a massive positive for all the forward-thinking guys. He's going to help us move the ball and transition well and he's a player who has that final pass and that I think me and him can build up a really good connection when we get back in the field together.
MF: Finally, let's talk about "Sunderland Til I Die", you were on it, they just came up with a third season which was really just signed the promotion push. Yeah. You were there on the first season...
LM: It was the second one.
MF: Everyone talks about Wrexham, screw Wrexham, that was the original series.
LM: Yeah, obviously really good for that club. It's a massive club to see them get promoted. Was something I was really happy to see. There's a lot of great people at that club, great fans and right now they're fighting for promotion. They've done so the same last year and I just wish that club all the best.
MF: Was it a media circus?
LM: No, it was okay. They do it quite well. You don't really take too much notice of them and everything's always optional from the player's standpoint so there was no distraction or that. That was cool.
