Media Day with Dante Vanzeir
February 20, 2024
MetroFanatic: Dante, leaving the incident aside, last year wasn't really a success for you. What was the most difficult part on the field?
Dante Vanzeir: For me, the most difficult part in the season was just the injuries. Starting with missing the preseason was already, let's say, more difficult to come into the team and be fit. Besides that, just the ups and downs with small injuries, playing one game, two games, have a little rest for the week. I think that was, for me, the most difficult in the season.
MF: Was the quality of MLS defenders surprising, how good they are, or maybe not?
DV: No, not especially, I think the games that I played I felt good on the pitch. I had some decent games, not the best, of course. But every time I played, I had the feeling that there was always something possible. I had my chances, but of course, as a striker, for me personally, in my experience, you need time to play, confidence, and once you get that, the goals, they'll come automatically. So that's a little bit how I felt last year, and hopefully we can change that this year.
MF: When I watched videos for you playing in Belgium, I saw often where you would run through the last line of defense and then score. Last time that happened against San Luis, and really, that was really the only opportunity.
DV: Those goals, I made a lot of them in Belgium. That's also one of my most dangerous things to show on the pitch. Maybe last year we didn't really have the automatisms like we wanted to, and that's also from my part, I didn't play too much games, so it's maybe difficult to find each other's qualities. With Emil now in the team, he has already that feeling. Lewis Morgan is coming back, he's also a guy that can provide a lot of balls. So yeah, I'm looking forward to this season. We have learned what we had to learn from last season and I'm very excited for the next season.
MF: So what did you have to learn?
DV: For me, first of all, the competition, the culture and everything, I think we had a very good lesson with that. Besides that, also the team, like I said, I didn't play too many games and of course in training, you can get to know each other, but it's not the same as on the pitch. I think you have to create memories on the pitch, create those goals, those things.
MF: The San Luis game, that ending was a pretty good memory.
DV: That was great. Yeah, those things. Then you don't forget those things and that's also what built a team those moments. So that's a little bit that I had to learn and, of course, it's a little bit different than in Belgium the style of play and and the Red Bull philosophy. So adapting to that was a little bit hard my last year and that's why I'm ready now to have no excuses for this year.
MF: You've been in America for like a year now. What's better in Belgium and what's better here?
DV: Without question, the food is much much better in Belgium!
MF: Specifically what food or just in general?
DV: The Belgium special dishes. I miss them That's that's a big thing. I miss from home.
