Caricola vs Columbus, 1996
Ten Best: Metro blowouts (Part 2)
November 7, 2006

  • 5) June 23, 2004: Los Angeles 0, MetroStars 3
The MetroStars play an incredible first half, dominating the supposed best team in the league on their home field. Amado Guevara scores one and Eddie Gaven adds two as the Metros completely put on a clinic against the Galaxy. The second half turns into a clinic too, a defensive one. As good a 90 minutes as we've ever seen the Metros play.

  • 4) June 30, 1996: Columbus 0, MetroStars 4
Still the biggest road win in Metro history, it featured a memorable long bomb from Nicola Caricola and a Tony Meola penalty kick save. The other Metro goals came from Giovanni Savarese, Tab Ramos, and, of course, Chris Unger.

  • 3) August 14, 1996: MetroStars 4, New England 0
The first game on the hated AstroTurf and ping-pong soccer saw a second-half debut of Antony De Avila, as Pitufo didn't disappoint, scoring the game's last goal. The others came from A.J. Wood, and two from Rob Johnson. This game filled us with hope for the stretch run... But this is supposed to be a positive article.

  • 2) June 15, 2002: MetroStars 5, Los Angeles 0
For a moment, Mamadou Diallo wasn't so evil, as the hated Mamadouchebag scored four in his second game with Metro (he had to fight off Rodrigo Faria to take a last-second penalty kick), abusing Alexi Lalas in the process. Brad Davis has the other Metro goal in what stood for more than four years as the biggest win in club history.

  • 1) August 26, 2006: New York 6, Salt Lake 0
Until this summer, when Bruce Arena got his first win as Metro coach in a six-goal drubbing of Salt Lake. All goals came in the second half, with Edson Buddle scoring the first three, half of his season total. Jordan Cila scored his first league goal, Todd Dunivant his first Metro goal, and John Wolyniec his first post-return goal.

    Just missing out:

  • July 28, 1996: MetroStars 4, San Jose 1
Peter Vermes' and Rhett Harty's first and only Metro league goals saw this drubbing of San Jose; Rob Johnson and A.J. Wood also scored.
  • July 13, 1997: MetroStars 4, Colorado 1
De Avila scored two and Ramos has his best Metro game with two of his own.
  • August 8, 2004: MetroStars 3, Los Angeles 0
The Galaxy hacks away, but Guevara scores a PK for a goal in five straight games, with Gaven and John Wolyniec piling it on in the second half.
  • May 14, 2005: Chicago 0, MetroStars 3
Metro stuns Chicago for their first win in Soldier Field since 1998, as Guevara scores the opener and Gaven adds the final two.
  • May 28, 2005: Columbus 0, MetroStars 3
Youri Djorkaeff scores his first Metro goal on a perfect blast, with Gaven and Abbe Ibrahim (also his first Metro goal) rounding out the scoring.
