Obscure Metro Files: One-game wonders (update)
August 24, 2010
Back in 2006, we looked at the not-so-exclusive list of players who played in one and only one game for Metro. Here's an update to the list:
2007: Sal Caccavale
A subject of Obscure Metro Files, Caccavale holds an almost-unbreakable team and league record of goals per minute of play, as he scored once in the two minutes he played in MLS. Those two minutes came in a 4:0 trashing of Columbus, which also saw Juan Pablo Angel's first MLS goal. Caccavale, who came to Metro via the now-defunct Supplemental Draft, was released after the season.
2008: John Gilkerson, Gordon Kljestan, David Roth
The trio played on one of the worst days in club history: a pathetic loss in the Open Cup when Metro was dominated by third division Crystal Palace Baltimore. Juan Carlos Osorio, after promising to take the cup seriously, trotted out Gilkerson, a supplemental draft pick, and Kljestan (Sacha's worse older brother) in the starting lineup. They lasted all of a half. By the time fan favorite David Roth had a chance to enter the game for the last 27 minutes, all was lost. The trio was given their walking papers in the offseason. Gilkerson ended up with Carolina of the USL. Kljestan re-tried out for Metro, failed, and also went to the USL, first with Cleveland and then Tampa Bay. At least they missed 2009... so it could have been worse.
2009: Alec Dufty, Walter Garcia
And worse it was. Surprisingly, the two players who played one game in 2009 did not appear in a loss. Goalkeeper Dufty, who was signed after surviving training camp as cover was suspended Jon Conway, was thrust into action in Houston as Danny Cepero was injured just eight minutes into the match. Dufty proceeded to help Metro shutout the Dynamo... and was promptly cut the following week, as Conway returned from his suspension. He's since backed up in Seattle and currently starts for St. Louis of the USL. Garcia was signed mid-season, to quote Jeff Agoos, to "use the remainder of the season to evaluate him." He was evaluated by riding the bench, until the season finale, when an early Mike Petke injury gave the former Argentine youth international a chance to play 81 minutes. Metro crushed Toronto 5:0, but that was it for Garcia, as he followed a failed trial at Leeds United by being released by Metro in the offseason.
